Foundations and Groundings

My name is Joshua and I am a philosopher of science and physics.  On this site, you will find some of my work as it relates to my research and to my teaching.  In general, I am interested in questions relating to the nature of things and in particular the nature of the world as presented by our best scientific theories.  I am interested in how our theories relate to our phenomenological experiences: where these theories need not be "scientific" and experiences need not be sensory.  Ultimately, I want to know what the world is telling us and how, if at all, our language (mathematical or otherwise) represents it.

Hitherto, my work has focused on the ontology of identical particle systems in quantum mechanics and their relation to Leibniz's principle of the identity of indiscernibles, the ontology of loops in loop quantum gravity, and the nature of spacetime in general relativity and developing theories of gravity.

Finally, I am interested in eduction: both in providing an education and in receiving one.  I love teaching and interacting with my students, in part, because I get to pass along a new appreciation for the subtlety of reality and because my students challenge me with problems I had not considered, thus inspiring me to new ways of addressing old issues in philosophy.

Welcome,
